The Beauty of the Bird

Birds in the Arts

A lecture by Matthias Depoorter on 17 December 2017

Even before man paints himself, he paints birds: as early as the Palaeolithic Era, they appear in cave paintings. In the following centuries their appearance changes from mythical to hyperrealistic and scientific.

Writer and art historian Depoorter took us on a journey through this fascinating world of ornithology, with a focus on painted birds in the arts from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries. Special attention was paid to paintings from museum collections in Antwerp.

The lecture was held in Dutch.

With the support of the Baillet Latour Fund.
